This work was largely inspired by a paper of Shustin, in which he proves that for a plane curve of given degree n whose singularities are not too complicated the singularities are versally unfolded by embedding the curve in the space of all curves of degree n; however, our methods are very different. The main result gives fairly explicit lower bounds on the sum of the Tjurina numbers at the singularities of a deformation of a weighted-homogeneous hypersurface, when the deformation is the fibre over an unstable point of an appropriate unfolding. The result is sufficiently flexible to cover a variety of applications, some of which we describe. In particular, we will deduce a generalisation of Shustin‘s result. Properties of discriminant matrices of unfoldings of weighted-homogeneous functions are crucial to the arguments; the parts of the theory needed are described.

Let A=A$_g, 1, n$ denote the moduli scheme over Z[1/N] of p.p. g-dimensional abelian varieties with a level n structure; its generic fibre can be described as a Shimura variety. We study its ’Shimura subvarieties‘. If x ∈ A is an ordinary moduli point in characteristic p, then we formulate a local ’linearity property‘ in terms of the Serre–Tate group structure on the formal deformation space (= formal completion of A at x). We prove that an irreducible algebraic subvariety of A is a ’Shimura subvariety‘ if, locally at an ordinary point x, it is ’formally linear‘. We show that there is a close connection to a differential-geometrical linearity property in characteristic 0.

We apply our results to the study of Oort‘s conjecture on subvarieties Z [rarrhk ] A with a dense collection of CM-points. We give a reformulation of this conjecture, and we prove it in a special case.

We consider the Dirichlet series Z(P,A;s) = [sum ]$_m∈ A ∩ Z^n$P$^-s$(m) (s ∈ C) where P ∈ R[X$_1$, …, X$_n$] and A is an open semi-algebraic subset of R$^n$. We will say that Z(P,A;s) exists if this multiple series is absolutely convergent. In this paper we study the existence and several properties of meromorphic continuations of such series, under certain assumption on P and A. As an application, we show the existence of a finite asymptotic expansion of the counting function with support in A: N$_p$(A,t):= [sharp ] m ∈ A ∩ Z$^n$ | P(m) [les ] t} when t → +∞.

In this paper we study reducibility of representations of split classical p-adic groups induced from self-contragredient supercuspidal represetation associated via Howe‘s construction to an admissible character, we show that in many cases Shahidi‘s criterion for reducibility of the induced representation reduces to a simple condition on the admissible character.

In this paper we study the trivial zero of the p-adic L function of the symmetric square of an elliptic curve and generalize a conjecture of Greenberg. For that, we use the new approach to p-adic L functions introduced in a previous work.

In this paper we construct examples of commutative rings of difference operators with matrix coefficients from representation theory of quantum groups, generalizing the results of our previous paper [ES] to the q-deformed case. A generalized Baker–Akhiezer function Ψ is realized as a matrix character of a Verma module and is a common eigenfunction for a commutative ring of difference operators. In particular, we obtain the following result in Macdonald theory: at integer values of the Macdonald parameter k, there exist difference operators commuting with Macdonald operators which are not polynomials of Macdonald operators. This result generalizes an analogous result of Chalyh and Veselov for the case q=1, to arbitrary q. As a by-product, we prove a generalized Weyl character formula for Macdonald polynomials (= Conjecture 8.2 from [FV]), the duality for the Ψ-function, and the existence of shift operators.

We prove, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis for imaginary quadratic fields, the following special case of a conjecture of Oort, concerning Zarsiski closures of sets of CM points in Shimura varieties. Let X be an irreducible algebraic curve in C$^2$, containing infinitely many points of which both coordinates are j-invariants of CM elliptic curves. Suppose that both projections from X to C are not constant. Then there is an integer m [ges ] 1such that X is the image, under the usual map, of the modular curve Y$_0$(m). The proof uses some number theory and some topological arguments.

Let X be a strongly pseudoconvex compact 3-dimensional CR manifolds which bounds a complex variety with isolated singularities in some C$^N$. The weighted dual graph of the exceptional set of the minimal good resolution of V is a CR invariant of X; in case X has a tranversal holomorphic S¹ action, we show that it is a complete topological invariant of except for two special cases. When X is a rational CR manifolds, we give explicit algebraic algorithms to compute the graph invariant in terms of the ring structure of [oplus ]$_k=0$$^$∞ m$^k$/m$^k+1$, where m is the maximal ideal of each singularity. An example is computed explicitly to demonstrate how the algorithms work.

In this paper, we study an exceptional theta correspondence, obtained by restricting the minimal automorphic representation of the adjoint group of type E$_7$ and rank 3 over Q to the dual pair GxPGSp$_6$. Here G is the anisotropic form of G$_2$ over Q; using the correspondence, we lift certain automorphic forms on G to holomorphic cusp forms on PGSp$_6$. This lifting provides the first step in a project to construct motives of rank 7 and weight O over Q with Galois group of type G$_2$.

There are infinitely many fundamentally distinct families of polarized Abelian fourfolds of Weil type with multiplication from the cyclotomic field of cube roots of unity. The Hodge conjecture is shown to hold at a sufficiently general fiber in any of these families.
