A detailed proof of the quantum double construction is given for Z2 -graded Hopf algebras, and an explicit formula for the graded universal R−matrix is obtained in a general fashion.

We derive formulas for the Minkowski sum, the convex hull, the intersection, and the inverse sum of a finite family of ellipsoids. We show how these formulas can be used to obtain inner and outer ellipsoidal approximations of a convex polytope.

The basic elementary results about convex sets are derived successively from various properties of segments. The complete set of properties is shown to form a natural set of axioms characterising the convex sets in a real vector space.

Given f ∈ C [−1, 1], let Hn, 3(f, x) denote the (0,1,2) Hermite-Fejér interpolation polynomial of f based on the Chebyshev nodes. In this paper we develop a precise estimate for the magnitude of the approximation error |Hn, 3(f, x) − f(x)|. Further, we demonstrate a method of combining the divergent Lagrange and (0,1,2) interpolation methods on the Chebyshev nodes to obtain a convergent rational interpolatory process.

This paper originated with our interest in the open question “If every pure subgroup of an LCA group G is closed, must G be discrete ?” that was raised by Armacost. The answer was surprisingly easy, but led to some interesting questions. We attempted to characterise those LCA groups that contain a proper pure dense subgroup, and found that every non-discrete torsion-free LCA group contains a proper pure dense subgroup; so does every non-discrete infinite self-dual torsion LCA group. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a torsion LCA group to contain a proper pure dense subgroup.

By means of defined concepts all metric spaces of given weight or cardinality and their quotients are characterised. An example of a sequential space having weight w1 which is not a quotient of any metric space of weight w1 is provided. The well-known classes of sequential spaces are also obtained as images of metric spaces by particular kinds of maps.

The concept of a convex space is extended to an H-space; that is, a space having certain family of contractible subsets. For such spaces the KKM type theorems, the Fan-Browder fixed point theorem, the Ky Fan type matching theorem, and minimax inequalities are given. Moreover, applications to a von Neumann-Sion type minimax theorem, a saddle point theorem, a quasi-variational inequality, and a Kakutani type fixed point theorem are obtained.

For a locally Lipschitz function on a separable Banach space the set of points of Gâteaux differentiability is dense but not necessarily residual. However, the set of points where the upper Dini derivative and the Clarke derivative agree is residual. It follows immediately that the set of points of intermediate differentiability is also residual and the set of points where the function is Gâteaux but not strictly differentiable is of the first category.

In the first section we establish a connection between gap Tauberian conditions and isomorphic copies of Co for perfect coregular conservative BK spaces and in the second we give a characterisation of gap Tauberian conditions for strong summability with respect to a nonnnegative regular summability matrix. These results are used to show that a gap Tauberian condition for strong weighted mean summability is also a gap Tauberian condition for ordinary weighted mean summability. We also make a remark regarding the support set of a matrix and give a Tauberian theorem for a class of conull spaces.

We study the sets of periods of triangular maps on a cartesian product of arbitrary spaces. As a consequence we extend Kloeden's Theorem (in a 1979 paper) to a class of triangular maps on cartesian products of intervals and circles. We also show that, in some sense, this is the more general situation in which the Sharkovskiĭ ordering gives the periodic structure of triangular maps.

In this note we show that a subgradient multifunction of a locally compactly Lip-schitzian mapping satisfies a closure condition used extensively in optimisation theory. In addition we derive a chain rule applicable in either separable or reflexive Banach spaces for the class of locally compactly Lipschitzian mappings using a recently derived generalised Jacobian. We apply these results to the derivation of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker and Fritz John optimality conditions for general abstract cone-constrained programming problems. A discussion of constraint qualifications is undertaken in this setting.

In this note, we show that the totally geodesic sphere, Clifford torus and Cartan hypersurface are the only compact minimal hypersurfaces in S4(1) with constant scalar curvature if the Ricci curvature is not less than −1.

Rolewicz said that the norm of a Banach space (X, ║·║) has the drop property if for every closed set C disjoint from the closed unit ball B(X), there exists an x ∈ C such that co(x, B(X)) ∩ C = {x}. He then showed that if the norm of a Banach space (X, ║·║) has the drop property then it is reflexive. Later, in 1990 Giles, Sims and Yorke showed that the norm of a Banach space (X, ║·║) has the drop property if and only if the duality mapping f → D(f) from the dual sphere S(X*) into subsets of the second dual sphere S(X**) is norm upper semi-continuous and norm compact-valued on S(X*).

We consider universal classes of multioperator groups, and give a sufficient condition for a subclass defined by algebraic elementwise rules to be a radical class.

In this note, we prove a signature product formula for generalised Seifert fibrations. We also discuss how this result can be viewed using the theory of minimal models.

In this paper the Verma modules Me(λ) over the quantum group vε(sl(n + 1), ℂ), where ε is a primitive lth root of 1 are studied. Some commutation relations among the generators of Ue are obtained. Using these relations, it is proved that the socle of Mε(λ) is non-zero.

The existence of twist orbits and twist cycles with a given rotation number is considered for discrete dynamical systems generated by iteration of liftings of maps of the circle into itself. The class of maps for which such orbits exist for every number in the interior of the rotation set is extended to contain an important subclass of non-continuous maps.

If (X′, τ′, ≤′) is an ordered compactification of the partially ordered topological space (X, τ, ≤) such that ≤′ is the smallest order that renders (X′, τ′, ≤′) a T2-ordered compactification of X, then X′ is called a Nachbin (or order-strict) compactification of (X, τ, ≤). If (X′, τ′, ≤*) is a finite-point ordered compactification of (X, τ, ≤), the Nachbin order ≤′ for (X′, τ′) is described in terms of (X, τ, ≤) and X′. When given the usual order relation between compactifications (ordered compactifications), posets of finite-point Nachbin compactifications are shown to have the same order structure as the poset of underlying topological compactifications. Though posets of arbitrary finite-point ordered compactifications are shown to be less well behaved, conditions for their good behavior are studied. These results are used to examine the lattice structure of the set of all ordered compactifications of the ordered topological space (X, τ, ≤).

This paper indicates how to apply the ellipsoid method directly to Linear Programming problems and proves that this kind of version of the ellipsoid method is almost as good as Karmarkar's type method in the theoretical sense.

The proof use a similar theorem of Kirvine, concerning Banach Riesz spaces. Here conical measures are a useful tool. We establish a link with a preceding work in which we adapt the Maurey theory factorisation of operators with values in a LP space, to the case of normal cones, contained in a Banach space.
