We revisit the stochastic model of Alai et al. (2009) for the Bornhuetter-Ferguson claims reserving method, Bornhuetter & Ferguson (1972). We derive an estimator of its conditional mean square error of prediction (MSEP) using an approach that is based on generalized linear models and maximum likelihood estimators for the model parameters. This approach leads to simple formulas, which can easily be implemented in a spreadsheet.

This paper builds on the two-factor mortality model known as the Cairns-Blake-Dowd (CBD) model, which is used to project future mortality. It is shown that these two factors do not follow a random walk, as proposed in the original model, but that each should instead be modelled as a random fluctuation around a trend, the trend changing periodically. The paper uses statistical techniques to determine the points at which there are statistically significant changes in each trend. The frequency of change in each trend is then used to project the frequency of future changes, and the sizes of historical changes are used to project the sizes of future changes. The results are then presented as fan charts, and used to estimate the range of possible future outcomes for period life expectancies. These projections show that modelling mortality rates in this way leaves much greater uncertainty over future life expectancy in the long term.

Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) with age, period and cohort as possible covariates are used to predict future mortality improvements for the Irish population. The GAMs considered are the 1-dimensional age + period and age + cohort models and the 2-dimensional age-period and age-cohort models. In each case thin plate regression splines are used as the smoothing functions. The generalized additive models are compared with the P-Spline (Currie et al., 2004) and Lee-Carter (Lee & Carter, 1992) models included in version 1.0 of the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) library of mortality projections. Using the Root Mean Square Error to assess the accuracy of future predictions, the GAMs outperform the P-Spline and Lee-Carter models over intervals of 25 and 35 years in the age range 60 to 90. The GAMs allow intuitively simple models of mortality to be specified whilst also providing the flexibility to model complex relationships between the covariates. The majority of morality improvements derived from the projections of future Irish mortality yield annuity values at ages 60, 65, 70 and 80 in 2007 in the range of annuity values calculated, assuming a 2 to 4 percent annual compound improvement in mortality rates for both males and females.

This paper aims to evaluate the aggregate claims distribution under the collective risk model when the number of claims follows a so-called generalised (a, b, 1) family distribution. The definition of the generalised (a, b, 1) family of distributions is given first, then a simple matrix-form recursion for the compound generalised (a, b, 1) distributions is derived to calculate the aggregate claims distribution with discrete non-negative individual claims. Continuous individual claims are discussed as well and an integral equation of the aggregate claims distribution is developed. Moreover, a recursive formula for calculating the moments of aggregate claims is also obtained in this paper. With the recursive calculation framework being established, members that belong to the generalised (a, b, 1) family are discussed. As an illustration of potential applications of the proposed generalised (a, b, 1) distribution family on modelling insurance claim numbers, two numerical examples are given. The first example illustrates the calculation of the aggregate claims distribution using a matrix-form Poisson for claim frequency with logarithmic claim sizes. The second example is based on real data and illustrates maximum likelihood estimation for a set of distributions in the generalised (a, b, 1) family.

In this paper, we present a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation algorithm for estimating parameters in the kernel density estimation of bivariate insurance claim data via transformations. Our data set consists of two types of auto insurance claim costs and exhibits a high-level of skewness in the marginal empirical distributions. Therefore, the kernel density estimator based on original data does not perform well. However, the density of the original data can be estimated through estimating the density of the transformed data using kernels. It is well known that the performance of a kernel density estimator is mainly determined by the bandwidth, and only in a minor way by the kernel. In the current literature, there have been some developments in the area of estimating densities based on transformed data, where bandwidth selection usually depends on pre-determined transformation parameters. Moreover, in the bivariate situation, the transformation parameters were estimated for each dimension individually. We use a Bayesian sampling algorithm and present a Metropolis-Hastings sampling procedure to sample the bandwidth and transformation parameters from their posterior density. Our contribution is to estimate the bandwidths and transformation parameters simultaneously within a Metropolis-Hastings sampling procedure. Moreover, we demonstrate that the correlation between the two dimensions is better captured through the bivariate density estimator based on transformed data.

Mortality data are often classified by age at death and year of death. This classification results in a heterogeneous risk set and this can cause problems for the estimation and forecasting of mortality. In the modelling of such data, we replace the classical assumption that the numbers of claims follow the Poisson distribution with the weaker assumption that the numbers of claims have a variance proportional to the mean. The constant of proportionality is known as the dispersion parameter and it enables us to allow for heterogeneity; in the case of insurance data the dispersion parameter also allows for the presence of duplicates in a portfolio. We use both the quasi-likelihood and the extended quasi-likelihood to estimate models for the smoothing and forecasting of mortality tables jointly with smooth estimates of the dispersion parameters. We present three main applications of our method: first, we show how taking account of dispersion reduces the volatility of a forecast of a mortality table; second, we smooth mortality data by amounts, ie, when deaths are amounts claimed and exposed-to-risk are sums assured; third, we present a joint model for mortality by lives and by amounts with the property that forecasts by lives and by amounts are consistent. Our methods are illustrated with data from the Continuous Mortality Investigation.

In this paper we review the Wilkie asset model for a variety of UK economic indices, including the Retail Prices Index, both without and with an ARCH model, the wages index, share dividend yields, share dividends and share prices, long term bond yields, short term bond yields and index-linked bond yields, in each case by updating the parameters to June 2009. We discuss how the model has performed from 1994 to 2009 and estimate the values of the parameters and their confidence intervals over various sub-periods to study their stability. Our analysis shows that the residuals of many of the series are much fatter-tailed than in a normal distribution. We observe also that besides the stochastic uncertainty built into the model by the random innovations there is also parameter uncertainty arising from the estimated values of the parameters.

We consider an insurer who has a fixed amount of funds allocated as the initial surplus for a risk portfolio, so that the probability of ultimate ruin for this portfolio is at a known level. We consider the question of whether the insurer can reduce this ultimate ruin probability by allocating part of the initial funds to the purchase of a reinsurance contract. This reinsurance contract would restore the insurer's surplus to a positive level k every time the surplus fell between 0 and k. The insurer's objective is to choose the level k that minimizes the ultimate ruin probability. Using different examples of reinsurance premium calculation and claim size distribution we show that this objective can be achieved, often with a substantial reduction in the ultimate ruin probability from the situation when there is no reinsurance. We also show that by purchasing reinsurance the insurer can release funds for other purposes without altering its ultimate ruin probability.

Equity linked products are popular in many countries. These contracts generally provide a guaranteed return combined with some participation in the market performance, often computed using a complicated formula. Hedging these contracts often presents a real challenge for insurers in particular during a financial crisis. In this paper, we explain how insurers can benefit from selling a pool of different contracts with different sensitivities to certain key variables to reduce risk exposure. We show how they can diversify their menu of policy designs to stabilize the market value of their liabilities against changes in the market volatility and against estimation error in the volatility parameter. We illustrate the methodology with specific examples of equity annuity contracts with opposite sensitivities to vega risk.

This paper presents a new method of graduation which uses parametric formulae together with Bayesian reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The aim is to provide a method which can be applied to a wide range of data, and which does not require a lot of adjustment or modification. The method also does not require one particular parametric formula to be selected: instead, the graduated values are a weighted average of the values from a range of formulae. In this way, the new method can be seen as an automatic graduation method which we believe can be applied in many cases without any adjustments and provide satisfactory graduated values. An advantage of a Bayesian approach is that it allows for model uncertainty unlike standard methods of graduation.
