Dans un contexte que l'on verra dans un moment, l'hérésiologue Hippolyte attribue à Héraclite les mots suivants: θνατoι θνητo, θνητo θνατoι, ζντεs τòν κεἰνων θνατoν, τòν, δ κεἱνων βoν τεθνετεspour ne rien préjuger de leur sens, il faut les traduire aussi littéralement que possible: « immortels mortels, mortels immortels, vivant la mort de ceux-là, mourant la vie de ceux-là » ; toutefois, on ne prend pas un grand risque en introduisant une copule entre le premier et le deuxième mot, entre le troisième et le quatrième, et en supposant une liaison causale entre les deux parties du fragment; on aurait alors, rejoignant à peu près la traduction proposée par Diels: « les immortels sont mortels, les mortels sont immortels, car la vie des uns est la mort des autres, et la mort des uns est la vie des autres. »

It has often been remarked that the dramatic element of the Platonic writings is unique in philosophy, and there have been many attempts to account for its presence. Recently there has been a greater tendency to see it as more than mere ornamentation or naturalism, as an essential element in understanding the philosophy of the dialogue. The one unquestionably authentic statement by Plato on philosophical writing is in the Phaedrus where Socrates, who wrote no philosophy, is made to criticize treatises because, among other things, a treatise “rolls everywhere, equally to those who understand it and to those for whom it is not fitting, and does not know to whom it should speak and to whom not” (275e). Plato, who did write philosophy, wrote no treatises, and it is reasonable to expect that he regarded the dialogue form which he employed as free from the objections to treatises.

The etymologizing which forms the torso of the Cratylus gives way, in the final pages, to an interesting, but brief, discussion of Heraclitean Flux. The transition is made on pages 437–8. Knowledge of reality through names has proved elusive because the names yield contradictory theses (411ff. versus 436–7). This being so, it is argued that the truth is only to be obtained by a direct acquaintance with reality (ta onta, 438E).

Parmi les théologiens catholiques du vingtième siécle, Karl Rahner jouit d'une autorité incontestable et d'une popularité qui lui est venue comme par surcroît. Il va sans dire que la popularité non recherchée est celle qui a le meilleur aloi. Ses travaux ont renouvelé pratiquement tous les secteurs de la théologie; ses érits ont été traduits en de multiples langues; le Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche a été réédité sous sa direction et suivant les axes majeurs de sa pensée; d'un mot, il fait école.

Que la tâche de fonder la morale soit particulièrement ardue, nul n'en doute, et la diversité des positions philosophiques en ce domaine nous incline à souscrire à la formule célèbre de Schopenhauer: « Prêcher la morale est chose aisée, la fonder chose difficile.» Tout penseur qui forme le dessein de fonder la morale est done en droit de se demander si un tel problème ne passe pas l'entendement humain et s'il sera jamais possible à l'homme de le résoudre. « Quel est le fondement de la morale ? », voilà une question qui semble s'imposer tout naturellement à notre réflexion, dût-elle par ailleurs demeurer sans réponse. Et pourtant, n'y a-t-il pas lieu de mettre en question la question elle-même et de s'interroger sur sa légitimité? Si une telle interrogation paraît, à première vue, insolite, c'est sans doute parce que, lorsque nous parlons de «fonder la morale», notre pensée s'oriente d'emblée vers la recherche du fondement (Grund), sans que l'on songe à mettre en doute le « bien-fondé » de l'acte même de fonder (Grundlegung). C'est précisément pour souligner notre intention de ne point éluder une question aussi radicale que nous avons formulé le thème de notre réflexion de la manière suivante: « Peut-on et doit-on fonder la morale ? ».

These words were written by a preacher-theologian of grey hairs and very great learning: “‘In the fullness of time’ God sent forth his Son, a pre-existent divine Being, who appears on earth as a man. He dies the death of a sinner on the cross and makes atonement for the sins of men… What a primitive mythology it is, that a divine Being should become incarnate, and atone for the sins of men through his own blood” Since 1941, when those wartime words were written, Dr. Bultmann has checked his inclination to apply the term “myth” in wholesale fashion, but his demythologizing works continue to be widely quoted, and their claims can still produce annoyance in the reader and plain uncertainty over what to make of the term “myth”, with its unmistakable smell of something not wanted. In this paper I want first to look into Bultmann's use of that word, and then, by remembering some things from the history of philosophy, to replace that uncertainty if possible with a smile of recognition.

The subject of this study is an ambiguity which is deeply rooted in Berkeley's arguments against matter. By a is shift between two meanings of the term ‘sensible’, he is able to construct a simple “refutation” of matter. Berkeley then attempts to show that this argument is irrefutable. The ambiguity of the original argument is, however, contained in the train of supporting arguments. My purpose in bringing attention to this ambiguity is not just to reveal a mistake in Berkeley's arguments against matter. This particular mistake, I believe, deserves scrutiny not only because it is a mistake, but also because it explains the strategy and order of Berkeley's arguments against matter. Furthermore, if this explanation is correct, then some light can be cast on some puzzling features of Berkeley's philosophy.
