The main objectives of this series of papers are: (1) to demonstrate the existence of serious mutual disagreements between established total (and other integrated) magnitude scales forVirgo galaxies; (2) to attempt to quantify both the systematic and random errors present within these magnitude scales; (3) to investigate the origins of any large error uncovered; and thereby (4) to encourage the general adoption of rigorous total-magnitude measurement procedures by the astronomical community. The ramifications of the findings presented in this series of papers will be discussed in detail at a later date.

In this paper, the first in the series, a self-consistent dataset of trustworthy total-magnitude measurements is compiled for a sample of Virgo galaxies spanning a range of 10 000 in apparent brightness, based on only the most reliable measurements and photometry currently available. This reference dataset, which includes luminosity profile shape information, will be used in subsequent papers as one of the bases for assessing existing magnitude scales forVirgo galaxies. As most published magnitudes are based on B–band observations, this series of papers will also focus primarily on B–bnd measurements.

We investigate the photographic-magnitude (mp) scale of Volume I of the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies for galaxies in the Virgo direction. It is found that for 11.5 ≤ Bt < 14.5, the mp values listed correspond very closely (with a scatter of only 0.16 magnitude) to blue magnitudes measured to the B = 24.4 isophote. If mp values need to be used as estimates of total blue magnitude the scatter is 0.27 magnitude over the same range in Bt and the mean offset is mp – Bt = 0.28 magnitude. However, a serious scale error at the bright end causes both the isophotal and total luminosities of galaxies brighter than Bt ~ 11.5 to be severely underestimated. At the faint end there also appears to be a significant scale error. This causes galaxy luminosities to be seriously overestimated faintward of Bt ~ 14.5.We demonstrate that this is a real effect based on a detailed galaxy-by-galaxy study of the catalogue’s completeness down to Bt = 17.0. The catalogue is found only to be complete to Bt ~ 14.7 whilst its degree of incompleteness is found to be relatively constant at the 30% level over the range 14.75 ≤ Bt < 15.75. Most of the missing objects are found to be elliptical galaxies and so late-type objects are over-represented at the faint end.

We present deep ATCA radio images of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae made at 1.4 and 1.7 GHz and identify 9 compact sources in the cluster core with 11 pulsars. At present there are several pulsars for which pulse timing analyses have not yet yielded precise positions. We examine other sources in the image, and on the basis of their spectral index find two that would possibly correspond to the pulsars with undetermined positions.

The Algol type eclipsing binary KZ Pav has been observed over one complete orbit (0.95 days) with theAustraliaTelescope CompactArray. Contemporaneous optical photometric data from the University of Southern Queensland’s Observatory at Mount Kent were also collected and have been included in this multi-wavelength study.

Preliminary indications are that the low levels of emission observed share similarities to those of some RS CVn binaries. The optical data show phase-linked effects which can be related to the mass transfer process of Algols. The possibility that the radio emission may be related to this process is considered.

Cosmic ray arrival directions at energies a little over 1018 eV have been reported to show an excess from directions close to that of the Galactic centre. That result was originally presented by the AGASA group and was later strengthened by an analysis of SUGAR cosmic ray data. We discuss here a second feature of the AGASA data, a deficit in roughly the Galactic anticentre direction.We interpret this as a result of cosmic ray diffusion past us. We find that the most straightforward interpretation of the data then requires that a strong magnetic field exists out of the plane of our Galaxy to distances of at least several kiloparsecs.

UBV observations of the massive binary system TT Aur were carried out mainly at theTurkish National Observatory (TUG). These observations, together with IUE spectra and times of eclipse minima collected from the literature, were used to study the system parameters.

Simultaneous solution of the light curves by the Wilson-Devinney code allows a semi-detached configuration with a slightly larger Roche-lobe filling secondary. This picture is supported by other evidence. The shoulders of the primary minimum suggest some excess absorption, in keeping with circumstellar material in the form of a disk-like structure around the primary component. The deeper primary minimum in the U filter may indicate a hotter region on the secondary-facing hemisphere of the primary.

The period variation of the system can also be related to the possible existence of a third component in a circular orbit around the system.

An alternative detached representation is also considered using optimal curve-fitting techniques. We appeal for further observations to help resolve some outstanding issues in this interesting massive binary.

Over the past few years, site-testing at the South Pole has revealed conditions that are uniquely favourable for infrared astronomy. In particular, the exceptionally low sky brightness throughout the near and mid-infrared leads to the possibility of a modest-sized telescope achieving comparable sensitivity to that of existing 8–10 metre class telescopes. An 8 metre Antarctic telescope, if constructed, would yield performance that would be unrivalled until the advent of the NGST. In this paper we review the scientific potential of infrared telescopes in Antarctica, and discuss their complementarity with existing 8–10 metre class telescopes and future proposed space telescopes. In particular, we discuss the role that a 2 metre class infrared telescope plays in future plans for the development of an observatory on the Antarctic plateau.

Observations of the Einstein Cross QSO reveal that the mid-infrared region is unaffected by microlensing. Thus, the infrared emission region must be extended on a scale >1017 cm, ruling out synchrotron models, but consistent with dust emission models. Other constraints rule out starburst models. The flux ratios greatly constrain the lens model.

We present evidence for an anti-correlation between faint QSOs and B < 23 galaxies.A sample of 192 QSOs in a 2.5 deg2 area has been imaged using the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide-Field Camera. The cross-correlation signal is of a similar amplitude to the galaxy auto-correlation function at the limit of B < 23, but is negative in sign. As fainter galaxies are selected the negative correlation signal becomes less significant, until the signal is effectively zero at B < 26. We propose two alternate explanations for the observed effect. The first is gravitational lensing of the faint background QSOs, which have a flat number count slope. However, the lensing signal is significantly higher than expected in conventional models. The second possibility is that inter-galactic dust absorption is responsible. A reddening of only E(B - V) ≃ 0.02 is required to produce the observed correlation. The large 2dF and SDSS QSO surveys should allow a definitive solution to the question of QSO–galaxy correlations.

We have commenced a program to monitor the gravitational lens B1152+199 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for variability of the lensed components with the goal of measuring the lensing time delay. As part of this program we made a 9 hour full-synthesis observation in June 2000 to derive a ‘template’ for model-fitting the shorter, multi-epoch, monitoring observations. We report here on the results of this full-synthesis observation and on three additional epochs of monitoring for time variation.

Microlensing observations may give us the first nano-arcsecond scale information about the structure of quasars. I review what is currently known about quasars on these scales, highlighting the principal uncertainties. I cover both the continuum emission and the broad line region. I conclude that little is firmly known about the structure of quasars.

One of the main objectives of the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) collaboration has been to find gravitational lens (GL) systems at radio wavelengths that are suitable for the determination of time delays between image pairs. The survey is now near completion and at least 18 GL systems have been found. Here, I will discuss our efforts to measure time delays from several of these systems with the ultimate aim of constraining the Hubble Constant (H0). Thus far three CLASS GL systems (B0218+357, B1600+434 and B1608+656) have yielded measurements of time delays, from which values of H0 ≈ 60–70 km s−1 Mpc−1 have been estimated. Although most GL systems give similar values of H0, statistical and systematic uncertainties are still considerable. To reduce these uncertainties, I will mention two monitoring programs that we are undertaking to (re)measure time delays in 14 CLASS GL systems and address several important issues for the near future.

The true nature of dark matter in the universe still eludes us. This paper discusses a new test for the detection of stellar mass compact dark matter in galaxy clusters by observing its gravitational lensing influence on the surface brightness of giant luminous arcs. If dark matter is in the form of stellar mass compact objects, then the extremes of such variability are accessible to a monitoring campaign with the Hubble Space Telescope. With the advent of the Next Generation Space Telescope, cluster dark matter in the form of compact objects will induce a ubiquitous ‘shimmering’ of the giant arcs.

We calculate the expected microlens light curves to see what aspects of flow structures can be extracted by microlensing.We specifically pick up a disk-corona model as a model for bright quasars.We then expect distinct behaviour in the soft and hard X-ray microlens variations. Since soft X-ray emission is produced by Compton up-scattering of soft (optical-UV) photons from the innermost part of the disk, while hard X-ray radiation is via bremsstrahlung within the corona of a large volume, the model calculations predict more rapid soft X-ray changes than hard X-ray ones. Further, bright spots (or blobs) on the disk will produce humps in the microlens light curves. Future microlens observations will constrain such emission processes, thereby probing accretion flow structure.

Gravitational lensing is most often used as a tool to investigate the distribution of (dark) matter in the universe, but, if the mass distribution is known a priori, it becomes, at least in principle, a powerful probe of gravity itself. Lensing observations are a more powerful tool than dynamical measurements because they allow measurements of the gravitational field far away from visible matter. For example, modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) has no relativistic extension, and so makes no firm lensing predictions, but galaxy–galaxy lensing data can be used to empirically constrain the deflection law of a MONDian point-mass. The implied MONDian lensing formalism is consistent with general relativity, in so far as the deflection experienced by a photon is twice that experienced by a massive particle moving at the speed of light. With the deflection law in place and no invisible matter, MOND can be tested wherever lensing is observed.

The 2 degree Field (2dF) galaxy redshift survey will involve obtaining spectra of approximately 2.5 105 objects which have previously been identified as galaxy candidates on morphological grounds. Included in these spectra should be about ten gravitationally-lensed quasars, all with low-redshift galaxies as deflectors (as the more common lenses with high-redshift deflectors will be rejected from the survey as multiple point-sources). The lenses will appear as superpositions of galaxy and quasar spectra, and either cross-correlation techniques or principal components analysis should be able to identify candidates systematically. With the 2dF survey approximately half-completed it is now viable to begin a methodical search for these spectroscopic lenses, and the first steps of this project are described here.

It is possible to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars spectroscopically if the spectra obtained during galaxy surveys are searched for the presence of quasar emission lines. The up-coming 6 degree Field (6dF) redshift survey on the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope will involve obtaining ~105 spectra of near-infrared selected galaxies to a magnitude limit of K = 13. Applying previously developed techniques implies that at least one lens should be discovered in the 6dF survey, but that as many as ten could be found if quasars typically have BJ – K ~ 8. In this model there could be up to fifty lensed quasars in the sample, but most of them could only be detected by infrared spectroscopy.

Alignments in the angular momentum vectors of galaxies can induce large scale correlations in their projected orientations. Such alignments arise from the tidal torques exerted on neighboring protogalaxies by the smoothly varying shear field. Weak gravitational lensing can also induce ellipticity correlations since the images of neighboring galaxies will be distorted coherently by the intervening mass distribution. Comparing these two sources of shape correlations, it is found that for current weak lensing surveys with a median redshift of zm = 1, the intrinsic signal is a contaminant on the order of 1–10% of the measured signal. However, for shallower surveys with zm ≤ 0.3, the intrinsic correlations dominate over the lensing signal. The distortions induced by lensing are curl-free, whereas those resulting from intrinsic alignments are not. This difference can be used to disentangle these two sources of ellipticity correlations. When the distortions are dominated by lensing, as occurs at high redshifts, the decomposition provides a valuable tool for understanding properties of the noise and systematic errors.

Using a multiple-lens plane algorithm, we study light propagation in inhomogeneous universes for 43 different COBE-normalized Cold Dark Matter models, with various values of the density parameter Ω0, cosmological constant λ0, Hubble constant H0, and rms density fluctuation σ8.We performed a total of 3798 experiments, each experiment consisting of propagating a square beam of angular size 21.9″ 21.9″ composed of 116 281 light rays from the observer up to redshift z = 3. These experiments provide statistics of the magnification, shear, and multiple imaging of distant sources. The results of these experiments might be compared with observations, and eventually help constrain the possible values of the cosmological parameters. Additionally, they provide insight into the gravitational lensing process and its complex relationship with the various cosmological parameters.

Microlens-induced variability in multiple quasars can be used to study two cosmological issues of great interest, the size and brightness profile of quasars on one hand, and the distribution of compact (dark) matter along the line of sight on the other. Here a summary is given of recent theoretical progress as well as observational evidence for quasar microlensing, plus a discussion of desired observations and required theoretical studies.
