An asymptotic formula is established for the number of representations of a large integer as the sum of kth powers of natural numbers, in which each representation is counted with a homogeneous weight that de-emphasises the large solutions. Such an asymptotic formula necessarily fails when this weight is excessively light.

We give a detailed exposition of the theory of decompositions of linearised polynomials, using a well-known connection with skew-polynomial rings with zero derivative. It is known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between decompositions of linearised polynomials and sub-linearised polynomials. This correspondence leads to a formula for the number of indecomposable sub-linearised polynomials of given degree over a finite field. We also show how to extend existing factorisation algorithms over skew-polynomial rings to decompose sub-linearised polynomials without asymptotic cost.

New proofs are given of the fundamental results of Bader, Lunardon and Thas relating flocks of the quadratic cone in PG(3, q), q odd, and BLT-sets of Q(4, q). We also show that there is a unique BLT-set of H(3, 9). The model of Penttila for Q(4, q), q odd, is extended to Q(2m, q) to construct partial flocks of size qm/2+m/2 – 1 of the cone kin PG(2m – 1, q) with vertex a point and base Q(2m – 2, q), where q is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8 and m is even. These partial flocks are larger than the largest previously known for m > 2. Also, the example of O'Keefe and Thas of a partial flock of k in PG(5, 3) of size 6 is generalised to a partial flock of the cone k of PG(2pn – 1, p) of size 2pn, for any prime p congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8, with the corresponding partial BLT-set of Q(2pn, p) admitting the symmetric group of degree 2pn + 1.

A graph is one-regular if its automorphism group acts regularly on the set of its arcs. In this paper we show that there exists a one-regular cubic graph of order 2p or 2p2 where p is a prime if and only if 3 is a divisor of p – 1 and the graph has order greater than 25. All of those one-regular cubic graphs are Cayley graphs on dihedral groups and there is only one such graph for each fixed order. Surprisingly, it can be shown that there is no one-regular cubic graph of order 4p or 4p2.

In a topological vector space, duality invariant is a very important property, some famous theorems, such as the Mackey-Arens theorem, the Mackey theorem, the Mazur theorem and the Orlicz-Pettis theorem, all show some duality invariants.

In this paper we would like to show an important improvement of the invariant results, which are related to sequential evaluation convergence of function series. Especially, a very general invariant result is established for an abstract mapping pair (Φ, B(Φ, X)) consisting of a nonempty set Φ and B(Φ, X) = {f ∈ XΦ: f (Φ) is bounded}, where X is a locally convex space.

We study the stability map from the rigid analytic space of semistable points in P3 to convex sets in the building of Sp2 over a local field and construct a pure affinoid covering of the space of stable points.

In this paper, we obtain some normality criteria for families of meromorphic functions that concern the exceptional functions of derivatives, which improve and generalize related results of Gu, Yang, Schwick, Wang-Fang, and Pang-Zalcman. Some examples are given to show the sharpness of our results.

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface and ξ a square root of the holomorphic contangent bundle of X. Sending any line bundle L over X of order two to the image of dim H0(X, ξ ⊗ L) − dim H0(X, ξ) in Z/2Z defines a quadratic form on the space of all order two line bundles. We give a topological interpretation of this quadratic form in terms of index of vector fields on X.

A left ideal on any C*-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate indentiy (r.c.a.i.). Indeed, left ideal in C*-algebras may be charcterized as the class of such operator algebras, which happen also to be triple systems. Conversely, we show here and in a sequel to this paper, that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. shoulod be studied in terms of a certain let ideal of a C*-algebra. We study left ideals from the perspective of ‘Hamana theory’ and using the multiplier algebras of an operator space studied elsewhere by the author. More generally, we develop some general theory for operator algebras which have a 1-sided identity or approzimate indentity, including a Banach-Stone theorem for these algebras, and an analysis of the ‘multiplier operator algebra’.
