In this paper we study the dependence of the first eigenvalue of the infinity Laplace with respect to the domain. We prove that this first eigenvalue is continuous under some weak convergence conditions which are fulfilled when a sequence of domains converges in Hausdorff distance. Moreover, it is Lipschitz continuous but not differentiable when we consider deformations obtained via a vector field. Our results are illustrated with simple examples.

In this paper we give conditions under which a positive order continuous operator T defined on a Banach function space can be extended, preserving the order continuity in a certain optimal way. The optimal domain for T turns out to be a space of weakly integrable functions with respect to a vector measure (defined on a δ-ring) canonically associated to T. A similar result is obtained when T is σ-order continuous and we want to preserve the σ-order continuity. We apply these results to kernel operators.

Let A be an artin algebra with representation dimension not more than 3. Assuming that AV is an Auslander generator and M ∈ addAV, we show that both findim(EndAM) and findim(EndAM)op are finite, and consequently the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture, the Wakamatsu-tilting conjecture and the generalized Nakayama conjecture hold for EndAM.

We prove that for all n ≡ 13 or 37 (mod 72), there exists a biembedding of a pair of Steiner triple systems of order n in an orientable pseudosurface having precisely one regular pinch point of multiplicity 2.

In the present paper we prove that every 2-local derivation on a semi-finite von Neumann algebra is a derivation.

We study left and right Bousfield localisations of stable model categories which preserve stability. This follows the lead of the two key examples: localisations of spectra with respect to a homology theory and A-torsion modules over a ring R with A a perfect R-algebra. We exploit stability to see that the resulting model structures are technically far better behaved than the general case. We can give explicit sets of generating cofibrations, show that these localisations preserve properness and give a complete characterisation of when they preserve monoidal structures. We apply these results to obtain convenient assumptions under which a stable model category is spectral. We then use Morita theory to gain an insight into the nature of right localisation and its homotopy category. We finish with a correspondence between left and right localisation.

We investigate strongly continuous one-parameter (C0) groups of isometries acting on certain spaces of analytical functions which were introduced by Kolaski (C. J. Kolaski, Isometries of some smooth normed spaces of analytic functions, Complex Var. Theory Appl. 10(2–3) (1988), 115–122). We characterize the generators of these groups of isometries and also the spectrum of the generators. We provide an example on the Bloch space of an unbounded hermitian operator with non-compact resolvent.

The geography and botany problems of irreducible non-spin symplectic 4-manifolds with a choice of fundamental group from $\{{\mathbb{Z}}_p, {\mathbb{Z}}_p\oplus {\mathbb{Z}}_q, {\mathbb{Z}}, {\mathbb{Z}}\oplus {\mathbb{Z}}_p, {\mathbb{Z}}\oplus {\mathbb{Z}}\}$ are studied by building upon the recent progress obtained on the simply connected realm. Results on the botany of simply connected 4-manifolds not available in the literature are extended.

In this paper we introduce a vector-valued uncentred maximal operator in the setting of one-dimensional Bessel–Kingman hypergoups, and prove a maximal theorem for it.

We prove the CR version of the Obata's result for the first eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian in the setting of a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian three-dimensional manifold with non-negative CR-Paneitz operator which satisfies a Lichnerowicz-type condition. We show that if the first positive eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian takes the smallest possible value, then, up to a homothety of the pseudohermitian structure, the manifold is the standard Sasakian three-dimensional unit sphere.

Motivated by a classical theorem of Schoenberg, we prove that an n + 1 point finite metric space has strict 2-negative type if and only if it can be isometrically embedded in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ of dimension n but it cannot be isometrically embedded in any Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{r}$ of dimension r < n. We use this result as a technical tool to study ‘roundness’ properties of additive metrics with a particular focus on ultrametrics and leaf metrics. The following conditions are shown to be equivalent for a metric space (X,d): (1) X is ultrametric, (2) X has infinite roundness, (3) X has infinite generalized roundness, (4) X has strict p-negative type for all p ≥ 0 and (5) X admits no p-polygonal equality for any p ≥ 0. As all ultrametric spaces have strict 2-negative type by (4) we thus obtain a short new proof of Lemin's theorem: Every finite ultrametric space is isometrically embeddable into some Euclidean space as an affinely independent set. Motivated by a question of Lemin, Shkarin introduced the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all finite metric spaces that may be isometrically embedded into ℓ2 as an affinely independent set. The results of this paper show that Shkarin's class $\mathcal{M}$ consists of all finite metric spaces of strict 2-negative type. We also note that it is possible to construct an additive metric space whose generalized roundness is exactly ℘ for each ℘ ∈ [1, ∞].

We construct a representation of each finitely aligned aperiodic k-graph Λ on the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}^{\rm ap}$ with basis indexed by aperiodic boundary paths in Λ. We show that the canonical expectation on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}^{\rm ap})$ restricts to an expectation of the image of this representation onto the subalgebra spanned by the final projections of the generating partial isometries. We then show that every quotient of the Toeplitz algebra of the k-graph admits an expectation compatible with this one. Using this, we prove that the image of our representation, which is canonically isomorphic to the Cuntz–Krieger algebra, is co-universal for Toeplitz–Cuntz–Krieger families consisting of non-zero partial isometries.

In this paper we present a new discreteness criterion for a non-elementary subgroup G of SL(2, ℂ) containing elliptic elements by using a loxodromic (resp. an elliptic) transformation as a test map that need not be in G.

Let G and T be topological groups, α : T → Aut(G) a homomorphism defining a continuous action of T on G and G♯ := G ⋊αT the corresponding semidirect product group. In this paper, we address several issues concerning irreducible continuous unitary representations (π♯, ${\mathcal{H}}$) of G♯ whose restriction to G remains irreducible. First, we prove that, for T = ${\mathbb R}$, this is the case for any irreducible positive energy representation of G♯, i.e. for which the one-parameter group Ut := π♯(1,t) has non-negative spectrum. The passage from irreducible unitary representations of G to representations of G♯ requires that certain projective unitary representations are continuous. To facilitate this verification, we derive various effective criteria for the continuity of projective unitary representations. Based on results of Borchers for W*-dynamical systems, we also derive a characterization of the continuous positive definite functions on G that extend to G♯.

In this paper we generalize some results, obtained by Shimura, on the special values of L-functions of l-adic representations attached to quadratic CM-base change of Hilbert modular forms twisted by finite order characters. The generalization is to the case of the special values of L-functions of arbitrary base change to CM-number fields of l-adic representations attached to Hilbert modular forms twisted by some finite-dimensional representations.

In this paper we are concerned with a class of p(x)-Kirchhoff equation where the non-linearity has non-standard growth and contains a bi-non-local term. We prove, by using variational methods (Mountain Pass Theorem and Ekeland Variational Principle), several results on the existence of positive solutions.

In this paper, we study the homogenised algebra B of the enveloping algebra U of the Lie algebra sℓ(2,ℂ). We look first to connections between the category of graded left B-modules and the category of U-modules, then we prove B is Koszul and Artin–Schelter regular of global dimension four, hence its Yoneda algebra B! is self-injective of radical five zeros, and the structure of B! is given. We describe next the category of homogenised Verma modules, which correspond to the lifting to B of the usual Verma modules over U, and prove that such modules are Koszul of projective dimension two. It was proved in Martínez-Villa and Zacharia (Approximations with modules having linear resolutions, J. Algebra266(2) (2003), 671–697)] that all graded stable components of a self-injective Koszul algebra are of type ZA∞. Here, we characterise the graded B!-modules corresponding to the Koszul duality to homogenised Verma modules, and prove that these are located at the mouth of a regular component. In this way we obtain a family of components over a wild algebra indexed by ℂ.

There are described equations for a pair comprising a Riemannian metric and a Killing field on a surface that contain as special cases the Einstein Weyl equations (in the sense of D. Calderbank) and a real version of a special case of the Abelian vortex equations, and it is shown that the property that a metric solve these equations is preserved by the Ricci flow. The equations are solved explicitly, and among the metrics obtained are all steady gradient Ricci solitons (e.g. the cigar soliton) and the sausage metric; there are found other examples of eternal, ancient, and immortal Ricci flows, as well as some Ricci flows with conical singularities.

In this paper we consider a number of finiteness conditions for semigroups related to their ideal structure, and ask whether such conditions are preserved by sub- or supersemigroups with finite Rees or Green index. Specific properties under consideration include stability, $\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{J}$ and minimal conditions on ideals.
