They were both hinged at one end, and their backs are flanked with deep flanges which must have fitted over a wooden bar or other element which moved in one piece with its metal cover. I am indebted to Miss Audrey Henshall, F.S.A., for detailed drawings of the backs of these two mounts, which were later adapted as brooches by their Viking owners.
