Wendy Webster is Professor Emerita of Contemporary British History at the University of Central Lancashire. From 2007 to 2009 she was Leverhulme Research Fellow working on the wider project on Englishness and Europe, 1939–75, on which this article draws. She would like to thank the Leverhulme Trust for supporting this project and the Australian National University for the award of a research fellowship in 2010 to develop it further. Earlier versions of this article were presented at conferences at the University of Aarhus, the Institute of Contemporary British History, and the University of Kent, and she is grateful to their organizers, participants, and audiences.
