Pieter M. Judson is Isaac H. Clothier professor of history and international relations at Swarthmore College.

Tara Zahra is associate professor of history at the University of Chicago. The authors would like to thank Franz A. J. Szabo, Gary B. Cohen, and Peter Haslinger for their roles in organizing the 2008 symposium “Sites of Indifference to Nation in Habsburg Central Europe” held at the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
