Autonomy, Felicity, Futility: the Effects of the Market Economy on Political Personality

Robert E. Lane

According to karl polanyi, the rise of “a market society”—not the industrial revolution—represents the major revolution of our time and the source of our ills; according to Weber, the ascetic materialism of modern capitalism represents “an iron cage” which has destroyed the great Faustian spirit of man, making him a “nullity,” a cog in a great machine; according to Schumpeter, market rationality has had a “conqueror's career” in shaping man's human relations and his philosophies.
