Among his recent books are Making Democracy Work, Bowling Alone, and Better Together: Restoring the American Community, a forthcoming collection of case studies of the renewal of social capital across America. His current research addresses the challenges of building community in an increasingly diverse society. This essay is a slightly expanded version of his presidential address at the 2002 APSA annual meeting
