The Anglo–Brabant Massif has formed a positive structural element since the Acadian orogenic phase in mid–Devonian times. As a consequence, the Caledonian basement lies at relatively shallow depth across the massif, encompassing a large area of southern Britain, the southern North Sea, southern Netherlands, Belgium and northern France (Fig.1).

Deep seismic reflection profiles over the Anglo–Brabant massif in the southern North Sea reveal reflection patterns throughout the crust that are distinctive and which differ significantly from those observed beneath adjacent areas with Mesozoic basins. Comparisons with reflection profiles from other platform areas suggest that the reflection patterns indicate large-scale structural features associated with compressional tectonics. If so, they may represent thrust structures associated with continental accretion of preferred Caledonian age.

In 1991 a deep seismic line, MPNI-9101, was acquired in the southern North Sea. The line runs from the Mesozoic Broad Fourteens Basin in the north, across the West Netherlands Basin, onto the London–Brabant Massif in the south. The London–Brabant Massif is a WNW–ESE trending stable structure located beneath southeastern England, the southern North Sea and Belgium. The London–Brabant Massif represents the most easterly part of the Anglo-Brabant Massif. At the northern margin of the London-Brabant Massif, Devonian and Carboniferous siliciclastic and carbonate rocks onlap the massif. Farther south, shallow parts of the seismic line in the vicinity of the axial zone of the London–Brabant Massif are almost completely devoid of primary reflections. This zone is composed of strongly folded Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary units which have been mapped in the onshore part of Belgium. Numerous seismic reflection multiples from the base of the Cretaceous are observed on this part of the section. The southern limit of the zone is very abrupt and may correspond to a fault belt delimiting an area of magmatic rocks known in the onshore part of Belgium. Unusually the deeper parts of the seismic line show a strongly reflective lower crust beneath the London-Brabant, a phenomenon which has not been observed on other deep seismic sections across the massif. Two-way travel times to the base of the lower crustal reflective zone (corresponding to the Moho), increase from 10 seconds beneath the West Netherlands Basin in the north to 12 seconds beneath the London–Brabant Massif, suggesting a thickening of the crust.

Gravity and aeromagnetic data from Britain, Belgium and the southern North Sea have been compiled to provide coverage of the greater part of the Anglo-Brabant Massif. Colour pseudo-relief maps of the gravity and magnetic fields highlight important anomalies and trends which provide new information on the structure of the massif and its margins. Within the massif, prominent SSE-trending geophysical lineaments define the margins of distinctive blocks within the upper crust. These are cross-cut on the northeastern margin of the massif by prominent ESE- and SE-trending magnetic and gravity lineaments. The possible history and origin of the more prominent geophysical anomalies and lineaments are considered. Integrated modelling of the potential field data has been carried out along the BIRPS MOBIL-7 seismic reflection line to provide an interpretation of crustal structure across the northeast margin of the massif constrained by all three datasets. The principal features of the model are a non-reflective, non-magnetic upper crust, interpreted as the Caledonian fold–thrust belt, overlying a heterogeneous middle–lower crust with laterally varying reflectivity, magnetization and density. ESE-trending magnetic anomalies along the northeast edge of the massif are explained in terms of an irregular mid-crustal magnetic layer with a susceptibility comparable to that of the Tubize Group in the Brabant Massif. The top of this body is coincident with prominent dipping mid-crustal reflectors observed on the seismic reflection profile and its overall geometry is compatible with mid-crustal imbrication inferred from the seismic data.

Digital processing and image-based display techniques have been used to generate contour and shaded-relief maps of Belgian aeromagnetic data at a scale of 1:300000 for the whole of Belgium. These highlight the important anomalies and structural trends, particularly over the Brabant Massif. North and vertically illuminated shaded-relief plots, enhanced structural belts trending west–east to northwest–southeast in the Brabant Massif and west–east to southwest–northeast in the core of the Ardennes. The principal magnetic lineaments have been identified from the shaded-relief plots and tentatively correlated to basement structures. Most short lineaments are correlated with individual folds while the more extensive lineaments are correlated with large scale fault structures. Magnetic highs within the Brabant Massif are attributed to folded sediments of the Tubize Group. The magnetic basement in the east of Belgium is sinistrally displaced to the north by an inferred deep NNW–SSE crustal fracture. The Bouguer anomaly map of Belgium identifies the Ardennes as a negative area, and the Brabant Massif as a positive area, with the exception of a WNW–trending gravity low in its western part. The southern margin of the Brabant Massif is defined by a steep gravity gradient coincident with the Faille Bordiere (Border Fault). Trial modelling of the gravity and magnetic data, carried out along profiles across the Brabant and Stavelot massifs, has identified probable acid igneous intrusions in the western part of the Brabant Massif, and a deep magnetic lower density body underlying the whole Ardennes region, which is thought to be a distinctive Precambrian crustal block.

Quantitative modelling of potential field data has been used to test and extend geological sections constructed for the new British Geological Survey Tectonic Map of Britain and Ireland. Three of the profiles cross part of the Anglo-Brabant Massif and provide new information on the nature of the pre-Mesozoic basement. A profile across southern England (passing just to the west of London) suggests that a significant contribution to observed gravity variations in the region results from changes in the thickness of relatively low density Lower Palaeozoic rocks. It also identifies a major deep-seated body with relatively high magnetic susceptibility and low density which is interpreted as a Precambrian cratonic core underlying the southeastern part of the Midlands Microcraton. Profiles across central and eastern England reveal major boundaries within the Precambrian basement, some of which coincide with structures mapped at surface. A number of intrusions of probable Caledonian age have been recognized, including bodies beneath the Widmerpool Gulf and The Wash. Those beneath The Wash appear to lie in a discrete basement region which separates belts of more magnetic basement lying to the northwest and southeast.

A new geological map, mostly subcrop, of the Brabant Massif is presented, based on a revised lithostratigraphy of the outcrop area and on recently acquired palaeontological and lithological data from boreholes in the concealed area. New interpretations of magnetic and gravity data are used to extend the lithostratigraphical units into areas with few or no boreholes. A structural model of the western, northern and southern parts of the Brabant Massif is presented. The main anticlinal axis plunges towards the west-northwest, its core comprising Upper Precambrian (?) to Lower Cambrian terrigenous rocks which outcrop in the southeast. To the north of the main axis, younger rocks appear in regular succession, but to the southwest this picture is complicated by the occurrence of a second anticlinal structure and by a subparallel magmatic arc.

White mica (illite) crystallinity data, derived mostly from borehole samples, have been used to generate a contoured metamorphic map of the concealed Caledonide fold belt of eastern England and the foreland formed by the Midlands Microcraton. The northern subcrop of the fold belt is characterized by epizonal phyllites and quartzites of possible Cambrian age, whereas anchizonal grades characterize Silurian to Lower Devonian strata of the Anglian Basin in the southern subcrop of the fold belt. Regional metamorphism in the Anglian Basin resulted from deep burial and Acadian deformation beneath a possible overburden of 7 km, assuming a metamorphic field gradient of 36 °C km-1. Late Proterozoic volcaniclastic rocks forming the basement of the microcraton show anchizonal to epizonal grades that probably developed during late Avalonian metamorphism. Cambrian to Tremadoc strata, showing late diagenetic alteration, rest on the basement with varying degrees of metamorphic discordance. During early Palaeozoic times, much of the microcraton was a region of slow subsidence with overburden thicknesses of 3.3–5.5 km. However, concealed Tremadoc strata in the northeast of the microcraton reach anchizonal grades and may have been buried to depths of 7 km beneath an overburden of uncertain age.

The Skiddaw Group comprises a marine sedimentary sequence deposited on the northern margin of eastern Avalonia in Tremadoc to Llanvirn times. It is unconformably overlain by subduction-related volcanic rocks (the Eycott and Borrowdale Volcanic groups) of mid-Ordovician age, and foreland basin marine strata of late Ordovician and Silurian age. The Skiddaw Group has a complex deformation history. Syn-depositional deformation produced soft sediment folds and an olistostrome. Volcanism was preceded (in late Llanvirn to Llandeilo times) by regional uplift and tilting of the Skiddaw Group, probably caused by the generation of melts through subduction-related processes. The Acadian (late Caledonian) deformation event produced a northeast- to east-trending regional cleavage, axial planar to large scale folds, and a later set of southward-directed thrusts with associated minor folds and crenulation cleavages. This event affected the northern Lake District probably in the late Silurian and early Devonian. The Skiddaw Group structures contrast strongly with those formed during the same event in the younger rocks of the Lake District inlier. The contrasts are attributed to differing rheological responses to varying and possibly diachronous stresses, and to possible impedence of thrusting by the combined mass of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group and the Lake District batholith.

Regional variation of white mica (illite) crystallinity in the Skiddaw Group is set against the structural interpretation of Hughes, Cooper & Stone (1993, this issue) in which early- or pre-Ludlow deformation and slaty cleavage development (S1) were succeeded by southward thrusting and an associated development of S1 and S1 crenulation cleavages, possibly during early Devonian times. Kubier index (KI) values are plotted in relation to geological structure for a major part of the Skiddaw Group, and cross-sections constructed. The pattern is interpreted in terms of three processes: (1) diagenetic to low anchizonal burial metamorphism under a relatively high geothermal gradient during the late-arc stage (early to mid-Silurian) which preceded the orogenic phase and formation of S1; (2) upper anchizonal to epizonal metamorphism due to tectonic thickening and slaty cleavage development during the early to pre-Ludlow orogenic phase following closure of Iapetus; (3) late-tectonic uplift of already metamorphosed rocks by southward-directed movement on the Loweswater, Gasgale Gill and Causey Pike Thrusts possibly during early Devonian time. An analogous interpretation is made for the Skiddaw area, though with the addition of major post-S1 contact metamorphism.

A fission track study has been carried out on apatite from the igneous rock belt running along the southern border of the Brabant Massif. The study includes age determinations and a length analysis of both surface tracks and confined tracks. Apatite fission track ages vary between 146 Ma and 209 Ma. Confined track length distributions and the projected length age spectra indicate that the rocks cooled relatively rapidly from above 100 °C to ambient temperatures. The fission track ages therefore date a cooling phase of the Brabant Massif which is interpreted as reflecting an important uplift during the major part of the Jurassic, related to the Cimmerian tectonism which affected the North Sea basin and adjacent areas. Two apatite samples from the southerly Dinant Basin yield fission track ages around 200 Ma, similar to the oldest ages observed in the Brabant Massif, and with comparable track length characteristics. This indicates that the uplift was not limited to the Brabant region but also affected the Hercynian basement to the south.

Deep boreholes show that plutonic and volcanic igneous rocks comprise an important component of the Caledonian basement in eastern England. The isotopic compositions of these rocks reveal that many of them are of late Ordovician age (440–460 Ma), and their geochemical compositions suggest calc–alkaline affinities. The intermediate (diorite-tonalite) plutonic rocks are associated with a prominent northwest–southeast trending belt of aeromagnetic anomalies extending from Derby to St Ives, Hunts., which is interpreted to work the plutonic core of a calc-alkaline magmatic arc. It is inferred that this arc was generated by the subduction of oceanic lithosphere, possibly from the Tornquist Sea, in a south or southwest direction beneath the Midlands Microcraton in late Ordovician times. The age and geochemical composition of concealed Ordovician volcanic rocks in eastern England, and hypabyssal intrusions of the Midlands Minor Intrusive Suite in central England, is compatible with such a hypothesis.

Lamprophyre sills and dykes of Ordovician age were emplaced within Cambrian–Lower Ordovician sedimentary rocks around the northern margins of the Midlands Microcraton. The intrusions show internal mineralogical and chemical variations indicating emplacement as multiple intrusions of co-magmatic pulses. The chemical characteristics of the lamprophyre magmas indicate formation by small-degree volatile-rich partial melting of lithospheric mantle enriched and modified by Lower Palaeozoic subduction (Th/Ta 5.3–11.6, La/Ta 29–82.3), together with a contribution from within-plate mantle source (Zr/Yc. 6) and/or mineralogically heterogeneous lithosphere, followed by varying degrees of fractional crystallization during uprise.

In England the Cambrian successions include relatively continuous, dominantly argillaceous sequences (Nuneaton area, > 900 m thick) and arenaceous successions punctuated by hiatuses (Malvern, Shropshire). The Tremadoc (lower Ordovician) succeeds paraconformably; it is widespread, dominantly argillaceous and locally very thick (> 2000 m). Deposition of the lower Tremadoc is thought to have been rapid. Uplift of regional extent occurred in early Ordovician (post-Tremadoc) times and inversion of the basins, such as the Tremadoc Worcester Graben, occurred during the Variscan Orogeny. The disposition of the Cambrian–Tremadoc beneath the Upper Llandovery unconformity is thought to reflect the arrangement of basins and highs at that time. Evidence from seismic profiles indicates deposition in half-grabens. In the Welsh Borderland, evidence from outcrops and boreholes suggests that the St David's Series (Middle Cambrian) is locally thickened against syn-depositional faults. The thinning and local absence of the St David's Series across such faults is attributed to the influence of tilt-block highs. Rifting and tilting allowed thick Tremadoc to accumulate (e.g. in a precursor Worcester Graben), but evidence for the direction of thickening is masked by lack of seismic markers and by the effect of pre-landovery erosion.

The sedimentology and palaeontology of carbonate beds in the lower part of the Fosses Formation (Ashgill of the Condroz area, central Belgium) have been investigated. Two depositional interpretations are suggested: deposition either near a platform-ramp margin as bioclastic turbidites and interbedded shales or on a shelf as a transgressive sequence following a regressive event. Faunal affinities with the Baltic area and Wales are confirmed, and the location of Belgium in the tropics during the Ashgill is supported by the calcareous algae and the coral fauna.

Core material from proven or probable Silurian sedimentary rocks beneath East Anglia has been re-examined. Four recognizable facies probably represent an environmental transition from anoxic basin slope or outer shelf through oxygenated outer shelf to storm-dominated inner shelf. This transition could have occurred laterally, from east to west across the Anglian Basin, or in time, from Llandovery (early Silurian) up to Př (late Silurian). Partial biostratigraphical constraints allow either interpretation, but the regional setting favours a marked facies transition through time as the Anglian Basin shallowed prior to the Acadian Orogeny. Reddening of the Silurian is mostly secondary beneath the sub-Triassic unconformity.

The early Palaeozoic convergence of Avalonia and Laurentia created a foreland basin at the suture zone of the former lapetus Ocean. Sedimentological and stratigraphic evidence of shallowing and contemporaneous shortening suggests that the southern part of the basin (the Windermere Group) became detached from its basement in the late Ludlow, and began to invert. The detachment beneath the basin rooted into a northwest-dipping mid-crustal thrust system. Contemporaneous uplift to the north of the late Silurian basin involved shortening of the Avalonian foreland basement by thrusting. Basin inversion occurred ahead of a southeastward-advancing mountain front. We postulate a foreland (southeast) prograding sequence of thrusting through the Ludlow in the Lake District. The basin continued to migrate onto the Avalonian foreland through the early Devonian, ahead of an advancing orogenic wedge, finally coming to a stop in the Emsian.

A review of isolated data from the literature and our own observations make it possible to establish a model of the stratigraphical history of the Ordovician on the southern margin of the Brabant Massif. The succession is composed of seven informal formations, totalling a minimum of 2500 m of sediments, mainly comprising mudstones, siltstones and sandstones. This succession is compared and partly correlated with the sections observed in the adjoining areas, in the Bande de Sambre-et-Meuse, the Stavelot and Rocroi Massifs and the Remscheid–Altena and Ebbe anticlines (western Germany).

The Lake District and smaller Craven inliers of northwest England contain a Lower Palaeozoic sequence deposited on the Gondwanan side of the Iapetus Ocean, close to the junction with the Tornquist Sea. The Tremadoc to Llanvirn Skiddaw and Ingleton groups are deep water assemblages of turbidite, olistostrome and slump deposits, formed at a continental margin. They experienced uplift and erosion as a precursor to the eruption of two largely subaerial Llandeilo-Caradoc volcanic sequences: the tholeiitic Eycott Volcanic Group in the north and the calc–alkaline Borrowdale Volcanic Group in the central Lake District. The volcanic episodes are the earliest part of a major episode of magmatism, extending through to the early Devonian and responsible for a major batholith underpinning the Lake District. Subsidence in an intra-arc rift zone preserved the subaerial volcanic sequences. A marine transgression marks the base of the Windermere Group, which comprises a mixed carbonate–clastic shelf sequence of Ashgill age, passing upwards through the Silurian into a thick, prograding foreland basin sequence of Ludlow turbidites. Deformation of the Lower Palaeozoic sequences was possibly diachronous from north to south. It is attributed to the late Caledonian (Acadian) Orogeny and resulted in folding, cleavage and thrust development. Granitic intrusions, including those at Shap, Skiddaw and beneath the hydrothermal Crummock Water Aureole, are partly syntectonic and were therefore penecontemporaneous with this deformation event. Some thrust faulting post-dates the intrusive phase. Post-deformation Devonian conglomerates are also present locally.

Borehole evidence from the Isle of Rügen, and geophysical data from the adjacent Baltic Sea suggest a Caledonian deformation front that caused NNE-directed thrusting on the East European Platform. It is thought to mark a Caledonian suture zone which was reactivated in syn- to post-Variscan events to form the Rømiø-Møn Fault Zone.
